Bowling for Dollars with Tom Ryther Taped in November 1977 Full broadcast

Found and restored for generations to come. A 1977 episode of Bowling for Dollars. Bowling for Dollars was a game show produced and aired locally on KSTP-TV in the 1970s. The premise was simple enough, contestants bowl for a jackpot and prizes. I understand from individuals that worked on the show, it was taped on Sunday morning about 6am and then aired on Thursday and Friday nights. Bowling for Dollars like Bozo was a regional "franchise" program, every market had their own version with a general format.

Mr. Silverman points out this is one of the few times KMSP attempted to compete with the established news organizations of KSTP and WCCO.
Religion, Priests, and Witches are all here along with a lot of young Twin Citians at the Gopher Theatre. Originally aired separately they are presented here together.

WTCN-TV "News Center 11" from December 21, 1981. 10pm broadcast. A couple years before Gannett purchased WTCN, and a couple years after WTCN became an NBC affiliate. This was a period where Channel 11's news sagged far behind WCCO and KSTP. In all fairness to WTCN, the network fare at NBC did not help much. (Look for commercials promoting Lucille Ball in Mame)
Still a fun broadcast with John Bachman as anchor and Tom Ryther doing sports.

Veterans Day covered by Paul Magers and Diana Pierce on WUSA.
For 10 months what was known as WTCN-TV and what is now known as KARE-TV was..WUSA-TV. Gannet changed WTCN to WUSA on July 4, 1985. These call letters were later used for a Gannet property in Washington DC, and WUSA became KARE-TV in June of 1986.
The station's news branding changed little between the call letters during the 1980s. This news open was the same theme and graphics that were used during the Gannet years of WTCN and the first months of KARE.

WCCO-TV Don Shelby's first 10pm Report September 23, 1985 (The hot tub set)

Don Shelby's first 10pm news broadcast, replacing Dave Moore. Dave's final 10pm was the Friday prior to this Monday broadcast. Don has been on the 10pm news on WCCO since. Dave Moore continued as anchor of the 6pm broadcast until December 1991.
Pat Miles had been on the 10pm report since 1982 and remained Don's co-anchor until leaving for KARE-TV in 1988. Also featured are Mike Fairbourne and Mark Rosen.
This was also the debut of the "hot tub" set. It was not a hit with the public and was dismantled two years later.

The Norwest Bank Snowman Commercial

After many requests, I have finally found the dancing Norwest Snowman commercial. Many remember the commercial, but few remembered the company that it was suppose to promote. I don't necessarily see the connection between the bank and the kids, but I guess in the mid 80s a commercial out of goodwill was in the budget.

A 1980s annual tradition: Cotton balls on Santa's beard on a poster from 7up. This was featured on my fridge for several years (new poster each year). Also commercials for McDonalds, CBS television, and a Don Shelby news update. Originally recorded December 15, 1987 during the annual Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer airing on WCCO-TV.

At Issue with Tom Hauser: The Jesse Ventura Years, originally aired January 2003

Jesse Ventura has resurfaced on the national media circuit, however refusing to speak to any Minnesota media. Jesse is not one to give up grudges or blame easily. This hour long news piece nicely done by KSTP-TV and Tom Hauser for "At Issue" aired shortly before Jesse Ventura left office. If anyone longs for the days of a Governor Ventura, watching this may remind you what it was actually like.

KMSP-TV's Prime Time News from December 1986 anchored by Rod Grams and Heather Harden

KMSP-TV's 9pm news was called "Prime Time News" for most of the 1980s. This 15 minute installment captures the look of what at the time was the metro's only early newscast. Future Senator Rod Grams anchored KMSP-TV's news from 1981 to 1992. For most of those years he was joined at the anchor desk by future Bloomington City Council member Heather Harden. This newscast features stories on the Iran Contra, Jonestown (this was seven years after the mass suicide), and drunk driving. Luckily our recording of Yogi's Christmas recorded in 1986 went over.

KSTP's "Newstar 5" The Twin Cities first Satellite news gathering truck! (and a news update)

KSTP promoted their latest gadget throughout 1984 - a truck called "Newstar 5". According to the promotion the "Twin Cities first mobile satellite news gathering service". KQRS' Tom Barnard narrates the information benefits the metro will have thanks to "Newstar 5". If you want to see this actual truck, it is exhibited in the Newseum in Washington DC as a donation from Hubbard Broadcasting.
Also in this clip is a news update from who I believe to be Karen Carnes, and a commercial for NEW "liquid" Tide. Recorded in December 1984 from my personal collection.

LaBelle's Catalog Showroom Christmas commercial from December 1984

Any long time Minneapolis resident should remember LaBelle's catalog showrooms. They were part department store, part catalog store, and very outdated by the 1980s. LaBelle's stores were purchased by BEST company (not to be confused with Best Buy) in the early 1980s and were renamed BEST shortly after. I will always remember the LaBelle's annual Christmas catalog which was just as big as the Wards and Sears catalogs we had at the house every year.

KMSP's Bright New News guys promotion from 1973

KMSP tried a number of different ways to attract an audience to their news in the 1970s. In 1973 KMSP tried a dual anchor format in Ben Boyett and Phil Bremen. The Boyett and Bremen team did not fare well against WCCO's Dave Moore and KSTP's Eyewitness News team which eventually was anchored by Ron Magers. Perhaps trying to tap into a youthful audience, the anchors here use humor to attract viewers to "Newsnine". Also are a few more ads that aired on KMSP from 1973 including a Bing Crosby golf tournament.

A WCCO-TV documentary on the farmer protest movement of the late 1970s. Reporter Tom Hendrick traveled to Washington D.C. with Minnesota farmers protesting farm legislation as many farms in Minnesota and across the midwest were going bankrupt. An example of in depth local journalism on a timely issue.

(How many more Moore's can we get in here?) The Moore and Moore promotion was to highlight that both Dave Moore and Doug Moore anchored the flagship news at 10pm.

Tom Ryther exclusive interview!

TC Media Now's exclusive interview with former KSTP and KARE sportscaster Tom Ryther. A native of St. Louis, Tom came to KSTP in 1971 to head the station's sports coverage, eventually being part of a KSTP news team earning record setting ratings that have yet to be matched. During this time Tom also hosted the Twin Cities version of Bowling for Dollars, recording over 500 half hour shows. In 1979 Tom joined station WTCN in it's earliest days as an NBC affiliate. Best remembered today as the sports side of KARE's news team of Paul Magers, Diana Pierce, and Paul Douglas, Tom has kept a relatively low profile since leaving KARE-TV in 1991. Listen to Tom tell his journey to the Twin Cities in his own words, as well as a final sign off he did not get to do on the air.

This team was selected through a national search by Frank Magid in 1970 and went on the air in July 1971. While not an instant hit with viewers, The World Today (and later in 1973 Eyewitness News) set record highs in Twin Cities news ratings.

"The Facts...as we know them" from January 1984

1980s public affairs and discussion programming on cable access - now online. Once aired on the Rogers cable system, "The Facts...as we know them" was (according to the host Brian Lambert) an award winning bi-weekly program on current events. The program regularly featured Erik Eskola, Pat Kessler, David Carr, and host Brian Lambert among others. This particular program discusses the 1984 elections and features Eskola, Carr, Dane Smith, and David Brauer.

KMSP in 1978: End credits of Taxi, KMSP News Update, Commercials, and Starsky and Hutch

A time warp to channel 9 in 1978. At this time KMSP was still an ABC affiliate, however not for long. In the spring of 1978 ABC announced they would be moving to KSTP in March of 1979. KMSP blocked out all ABC branding from their station promotions, and even in this case blocked out the national news feed.
In this clip we have the end credits to Taxi, some commercials from the era (including Montgomery Ward), a news update from then KMSP anchor Don Harrison, and the opening to Starsky and Hutch.

Don Shelby will be exiting WCCO-TV later this year. As many of us who have grown up watching Shelby over the past 30 years we know that he brings a large resume of investigative reporting, launching the I-Team in 1978. While not a lot of Don's investigative reporting as crossed my collection or as MinnPost's David Brauer pointed out found on WCCO's website, I did find this somewhat different video of Don assisting a young girl with a savings account from TCF bank. Not sure if this report ever aired, it has been one of my more unique and humorous finds. From what I gather from markings on the tape this was recorded in 1983.

KMSP-TV "Newswatch" from February 1979, Steve Doyle and Cicely Hand

From the days of KMSP's ABC affiliation, this clip is the first 15 minutes of a 10pm news broadcast on KMSP-TV Channel 9 from February 1979. To provide some historical context, I left in the end credits of "Soap" which ended right before the news. ABC's network switch to KSTP was just weeks away, all station branding had been scrubbed of any mention of the ABC television network. Note most of the news coverage in this broadcast are all network packages. One of the few local items is an interesting story on Minneapolis North High School with longtime Twin Cities activist Spike Moss.
A good essay on the pre-independent days of KMSP can be found on Jeff Lonto's site.

"This Must Be the Place" appears to have been a late night weekend talk show with WCCO host, weatherman, and anchor Bill Carlson. It looks to be a collage of interviews taken and recorded at separate times and edited together for this half hour installment. (with a strange computerized cat opening/close) I do not have a lot of memory or background of this program. In tonight's TMBTP features interviews with Annette O'Toole and Dave Durenberger.
WTCN-TV News Center 11 October 9, 1979 (Most of broadcast)

A very little watched news broadcast on a recent affiliate of the also little watched NBC network (at the time). Stan Bohrman anchored the WTCN news for about a year when WTCN gained the NBC affiliation from KSTP. WTCN was trying to heavily promote its NBC affiliation in station branding. If nothing else it is worth to hear the disco news theme song.

A documentary on the effects of TV viewing done by Dave Moore and WCCO that aired in 1979. Five families volunteered to have their TV disabled by a certified television repair technician (sent by Daytons) and figured out how to live without a member of their family (the TV) for one month.

TC Media Now exclusive interview with KSTP and KARE's Dennis Feltgen

TCMedianow caught up with former KSTP and KARE meteorologist Dennis Feltgen late last year to take a look back at a dozen years of forecasting in the Twin Cities. Mr. Feltgen was chief meteorologist at KSTP from 1977 to 1986 and lead many of the innovations in broadcast meteorology that are still evident on KSTP and other stations today. Starting in the era of black marker drawn weather maps, progressing into the first Doppler radar, live reports from hurricanes along the gulf and eastern coasts, and even a stint as KSTP's "Mr. Weather", Dennis Feltgen was a large part of our local media culture for the better part of a generation. Today in addition to being a frequent contributor of footage to tcmedianow, Dennis Feltgen is Public Affairs Officer and Meteorologist for NOAA in Miami and happily married to a native Minnesotan.

"Mr. Weather" was a campaign developed by Hubbard Broadcasting to promote and build the brand of KSTP weather. Dennis Feltgen was promoted as "Mr. Weather" and would visit schools and organizations demonstrating science and weather. Dennis Feltgen was also branded as "Mr. Weather" in the evening weather segments. Budget cuts, staff changes, and strategy made Mr. Weather a short lived campaign, however enjoy a promo from 1985 as Mr. Weather walks freely through the halls of an elementary school.

TThe end of a broadcast day at KMSP Channel 9 in 1977. This looks to be the daily news update that probably aired well after the late local news and after the late movie (or in this case a rerun of "It Takes a Thief"). No anchor, just an announcer with some of the stories that more than likely aired in the 10pm news that night. The State and National economy, artificial sweeteners, and massage parlors are the topics this night with familiar faces such as Jimmy Carter, Martin Sabo, and Earl Gray. At the end is a clip that aired immediately after on religion hosted by former Michelle Bachman Congressional challenger El Tinklenberg.

WCCO 6pm Report from December 6, 1983

WCCO's 6pm Report from December 6, 1983 with Dave Moore, Pat Miles, Mike Fairbourne, and Ralph Jon Fritz. The current WCCO studio on 11th and Nicollet was less than a year old in 1983, notice that the news set is in the news room with monitors, flashing banners, and a full crew of WCCO news employees gathering information. I lost track of the number of sets that they go through in a half hour, sometimes the anchors are sitting together, other times they are talking in separate studios.
Some of the timely stories in this edition: Minneapolis property taxes, Christmas charitable giving, The Vikings, cold weather, and of course adult book stores.

WCCO Moore Report: Thy Will Be Done, Examination of New Religious Organizations and Cults, aired originally January 3, 1980

WCCO's Controversial documentary "Thy Will Be Done", a critical examination of organized "new" religious organizations and cults as well as "deprogrammers". I have saved this one for a long time to post, it's not 90 minutes that can be watched lightly.
To put this in historical context, the events of Jonestown, and the Manson murders were not distant memories in 1980. The Unification Church was considered at it's peak in mainstream society in the 1970s, and Minnesota's U.S. Representative Donald Fraser had done an extensive investigation on the Unification Church's financial practices.
The documentary (under the Moore Report title), host Dave Moore and WCCO examine the impact of the new religious organizations and their effect on families in Minnesota. The term cult is used frequently, and is defined during this film.
Connecting with family members of organization members, WCCO travels across the country looking for answers to why Minnesotans enter these organizations, debates weather they are in fact cults and why it's members disconnect from the outside world.
The controversial method of "deprogramming" is examined critically both from a legal and emotional perspective, in one segment the WCCO camera follows one intervention between the parents of a cult member and her eventual deprogramming session.
This documentary aired under a great amount of controversy. Lawyers of the religious organization of Brother Rama Behera and the Disciples of Lord Jesus filed lawsuits against WCCO which were not settled until the FCC ruled in WCCO's favor in 1983. The original airing was followed by a WCCO "Town Hall Meeting" with a diverse group of lawyers, the ACLU (who were against the deprogramming method), Leaders of Religious Groups, former members, current members, and the general public. Since the tape that I have is the second showing, there is no Town Hall Meeting, but instead a response from the Unification Church and the Church of Scientology.
This video was shown in High Schools in Minnesota as late as the mid 1990s (I watched this in a High School Social Studies class in 1995). It has probably been 30 years or more since most people who have seen this previously first viewed it, and most viewers of this site probably have never seen it. When I posted WCCO's documentary Death in the Family I was hoping to find any participants in the study to reach out and connect 30 years later. Thanks to my friends at MinnPost and David Brauer, we did find one of the documentaries participants. While a much more emotional and complicated subject, I still encourage and ask that if anyone out there is part of this film and would like to provide their insight to the past and present to contact me here

"Vision on Ice" KSTP special on the 1986 St. Paul Winter Carnival Ice Palace hosted by Ruth Spencer

25 years ago the St Paul Winter Carnival and the City of St Paul built a large Ice Palace on the island of St Paul's Lake Phalen. Over a million people visited and viewed this magnificent structure during the 1986 Winter Carnival. KSTP produced and aired this short documentary as a video tribute to the palace, and actually encouraged viewers to record and save the video. KSTP's then evening news anchor Ruth Spencer hosts "Vision on Ice".

An Interview with Andre Bernier former KARE Meteorologist

Before Frank and Amelia on WCCO, the Twin Cities had "The Weather Couple" on KARE-TV. Albeit a short stint, Married Meteorologists Sally Patrick and Andre Bernier provided weather on News11 Sunrise together in the fall of 1987, Sally inside and Andre in the backyard. In early 1988 Andre Bernier went to WJW-TV and has been there ever since, bringing the concept of outdoor weather broadcasting to Cleveland. Sally soon followed and also provided weather forecasts to the Cleveland area until retiring from television in 2009.
Andre has provided great contributions to tcmedianow.com and was gracious enough to provide me this interview virtually in 2009.
More on Andre can be found at his website: http://www.andrebernier.com/

WTCN-TV Presents "Scared Straight" Includes analysis with Dick Cavett and Town Hall Meeting with Stuart A Lindman from 1979

"Scared Straight" was a 1978 Academy Award winning documentary directed by Arnold Shapiro and narrated by Peter Falk. The production was filmed at Rahway State Prison and showed a controversial method of showing at risk youth the reality of prison life. "Lifers" berated the youth visiting the prison, with the purpose of "Scaring" them straight.
The documentary was aired on television in 1979, and locally here on WTCN-TV. Introduced by then station manager Bob Fransen, the program contained an advisory of "coarse street language". In fact it was the first time some of the words were aired on broadcast television.
As shown on WTCN, the documentary's commercials were PSAs from then Senator Dave Durenberger, St. Paul City Council member Ron Maddox, Minneapolis Mayor Don Fraser, and St. Paul Mayor George Latimer among others.
The documentary itself is available commercially through Amazon, so I will not be providing that, what is available to view is the introduction, wrap around segments, a discussion with Dick Cavett, and WTCN's Town Hall Meeting that discusses the effectiveness of the Scared Straight Program.

KSTP Eyewitness News at 5 with Stan Turner and Dennis Feltgen March 18, 1982 full report with commercials

KSTP-TV's Eyewitness News at 5 from March 18, 1982.
5pm newscasts were a relatively modern installment in the Twin Cities in the early 1980s. WCCO and KSTP positioned their 5pm broadcasts to be lighter and provide greater depth to human interest stories. This installment focuses on the snowfall of 1982 that was continuing into late March. The Eyewitness News team searches out how people cope with the snow (including Dave Dahl's tip of smiling when providing a less than ideal forecast). Dr. Michael Breen discuses the psychological effects of cold and snow, and Arthur Ballet gives a very lengthy and theatrical review of the movie "The Amateur". Stan Turner anchors and Dennis Feltgen provides a forecast in this full report from March 18, 1982 with the original commercials.
From Dennis Feltgen:
The great winter of '82 kept on keeping on. The computer graphics were done on a Kavouras g-dos system...we called it "the mapper". The satellite loop came with a graphics tablet, which was new to TV at the time. BTW, in the background of the war room shot is Ron Trenda and John Dooley.

WTCN's version of NBC's "Proud as a Peacock" promotion aired in 1979 (during a rerun of Ironside). In 1979, third place NBC ran a series of promotions under the "Proud as a Peacock" theme. It was lampooned in the media, including NBC's own Saturday Night Live. WTCN the new NBC affiliate in the Twin Cities tried to imitate the campaign by showing off their new newsteam (including Stan Bohrman and Dr. Michael Breen), helicopter, and reruns of Mary Tyler Moore and MASH. Probably the only thing that had an audience during this period was the reruns of MASH.

KSTP Eyewitness News at 5pm coverage of the Downtown Minneapolis Thanksgiving Fire November 26, 1982 Stan Turner, Cyndy Brucato, Dennis Bounds

Thanksgiving Day 1982, 5pm
The remains of the downtown Minneapolis Donaldson's store glowed in a blaze of fire in what has been one of Minneapolis' largest and most destructive fires in the cities history. The fire, which was started by arson started in the remains of Donaldson's former downtown store eventually catching Northwestern Bank's Headquarters (later Norwest, now Wells Fargo) destroying the building and damaging the iconic "Weather Ball", ultimately leaving a block of downtown Minneapolis in ashes for what should have been the biggest shopping day of the year.
In this report from KSTP-TV, Stan Turner reports directly from the scene of the fire 24 hours later.
A day in Minnesota and Minneapolis history not forgotten. Interesting video and images of what downtown Minneapolis looked like almost 30 years ago.

Behind the Scenes at WTCN

For the die hard Twin Cities TV fan. An interesting parody film done on what goes on behind the scenes at WTCN made what I can guess would be the late 1960s. Features WTCN employees Gil Amundson, Mel Jass, Halsey Hall and others.

KARE-TV: "Behind the Wall" series on East Germany with Paul Douglas from 1988

The first local news organization in the country to have a great level of access to film and report in East Germany, Paul Douglas accompanied by his father (a native German) and a KARE-TV photographer examine life in East Germany in this six part series aired in 1988. Paul's father visits the site of his boyhood home, interviews with East German citizens (all interviews and shots were done with an East German present), and looks at how meteorology is reported on state run television.
Interviewees do not see a lot of hope in the Berlin wall coming down, a concept that became reality about a year later.

July 18, 1986 Fridley/Brooklyn Park tornado video replay, aired on KARE-TV July 19, 1986

Immediately following the infamous Sky11 footage of the tornado over Fridley and Brooklyn Park on July 18, 1986, KARE-TV received tons of phone calls requesting the station to replay the footage. The footage was heavily replayed on the 6pm and 10pm newscasts the day of the event, during the weekend, KARE put together this montage of both the helicopter footage and some amateur footage shot and provided to KARE. In one scene the amateur videographer catches KARE's helicopter circling the tornado. The montage is eerily yet appropriately set to the song "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls."

Paul Douglas on "Rejoice" February 1984

Paul Douglas of WTCN (now KARE) interviewed on religious talk show "Rejoice". Paul talks about weather forecasting, technology, and faith in this segment that originally aired on WFBT-TV 29 (now WFTC) in February 1984.

Note on the fuzzy picture - this was taped off the air before the era of cable, channel 29 a UHF station had a much weaker picture than we would expect today. Many of us can remember having to adjust our set antennas to get a decent picture to watch Batman and cartoons.

KTCI-TV Sign off 1984

Through the 1980s and most of the 1990s, Public Television KTCI-TV UHF sister station of KTCA-TV always looked about ten years behind the main station. From having radar weather broadcasting all day to the use of slides as graphics through the 1990s made it a notch above public access but far behind any other station on the dial. Lucky this sign off from 1984 was recorded from what looks like cable to get a clear vision of what the final moments of a broadcast day might look like, it was probably 9pm?

WTCN aired this promotion just prior to the Twin Cities network switch (ABC to KSTP, NBC to WTCN, KMSP to independent). Understandably many viewers were confused (or didn't care). Janet Mason of WTCN does some "man on the street" interviews downtown Minneapolis asking the interviewee to explain the switch.

In 1980 audio engineer Bob Rivard shot this footage of a 10pm NewsCenter 11 with his personal camcorder. A very unique and interesting perspective of the behind the scenes feel of a newscast featuring anchor Stan Bohrman, Meteorologist Glenn Burns, and sportscaster Tom Ryther.

WTCN-TV (now KARE) News11 first 5pm edition Paul Magers, Kirstin Lindquist, Paul Douglas, and Jeff Passolt June 10, 1985 Full broadcast

WTCN in the early 1980s was the traditional third place newscast against KSTP and WCCO. When Gannett purchased WTCN from Metromedia in 1983, the station not only got new owners but budgets and upper management dedicated to producing winning news. Being in third place afforded WTCN to do some experimenting. Paul Douglas' backyard was built in 1983, as well as changing the 6pm news to an hour at 5pm. The concept had been tried a decade earlier at WCCO, and much like its predecessor WTCN eventually went back to half hour installments. This date is the first time WTCN had a 5, 6, and 10pm newscast introducing Kirstin Lindquist as Paul Magers co-anchor along with Paul Douglas' weather and Jeff Passolt's sports.

WTCN-TV (now KARE-TV) final News11 Hour, June 1985 Paul Magers, Paul Douglas, Tom Ryther

WTCN had only been a network affiliate since 1979 when ABC defected to KSTP, and WTCN was fortunate enough to win the affiliation over KMSP. A combination of a poor NBC programming and a parent company (Metromedia) that had little experience in running a network affiliate with a full service news operation. This is the final broadcast of the News11 hour, aired on Friday June 7th 1985. Monday, the news would be split up into the 5, 6, and 10 editions as they remain today.
In addition to news, weather, and sports, News 11 did an investigative story on the crime of Hennepin Avenue's Block E. Some great images of a notroious district gone but not long forgotten.

Friendly Operators, No Phone Books, Direct Connect, Free Call, 1980s Synthesizer theme...the Connection
This commercial was a fixture of daytime TV for years until the internet bumped it from it's relevance. For me the best part of these commercials were the computer graphics and the theme. In this Connection commercial from 1986, John Hines invites viewers to write their own Connection commercial with a chance of starring in a commercial or having it read on WLOL.
