From October 1978: WCCO 10pm report tease and open with Dave Moore and Doug Moore. Also commercials for CBS programs WKRP, Lou Grant, and more….

In a pre-24 hour news world in 1976, the final news of the day on WCCO Channel 4 was a voiceover a painted slide reading the day’s headlines. This was after the CBS late movie, the tape cut after a couple minutes, so I am not sure how long this originally aired. Interested if anyone viewing this can identify the names of the “news makers” painted in this picture.

Don Shelby will be exiting WCCO-TV later this year. As many of us who have grown up watching Shelby over the past 30 years we know that he brings a large resume of investigative reporting, launching the I-Team in 1978. While not a lot of Don’s investigative reporting as crossed my collection or as MinnPost’s David Brauer pointed out found on WCCO’s website, I did find this somewhat different video of Don assisting a young girl with a savings account from TCF bank. Not sure if this report ever aired, it has been one of my more unique and humorous finds. From what I gather from markings on the tape this was recorded in 1983.

(How many more Moore’s can we get in here?) The Moore and Moore promotion was to highlight that both Dave Moore and Doug Moore anchored the flagship news at 10pm.

Don Shelby and Pat Miles joined WCCO-TV in 1978 to co-anchor weekend newscasts and report during the week. This broadcast is from that first year in June 1979. Don is anchoring the news solo this evening as Pat is on assignment at a charity tennis tournament. Also featured in this full half hour is Bill Carlson providing weather and Hal Scott’s sports. The first half of a WCCO-TV News “10pm Report” from what I believe is from 1981. This was the era of Moore and Moore, Dave Moore being paired with Doug Moore who on the air and print provided the disclaimer they were not related. Doug Moore was Dave’s co-anchor from 1977 to 1982 and was last known to be anchoring in San Jose. A feature of this news report is on Ted Turner’s “new” 24 hour cable news operation CNN.

A WCCO-TV documentary on the farmer protest movement of the late 1970s. Reporter Tom Hendrick traveled to Washington D.C. with Minnesota farmers protesting farm legislation as many farms in Minnesota and across the midwest were going bankrupt. An example of in depth local journalism on a timely issue.

Don Shelby’s first 10pm news broadcast, replacing Dave Moore. Dave’s final 10pm was the Friday prior to this Monday broadcast. Don has been on the 10pm news on WCCO since. Dave Moore continued as anchor of the 6pm broadcast until December 1991.
Pat Miles had been on the 10pm report since 1982 and remained Don’s co-anchor until leaving for KARE-TV in 1988. Also featured are Mike Fairbourne and Mark Rosen.
This was also the debut of the “hot tub” set. It was not a hit with the public and was dismantled two years later.
